Bonjour, I am writing a story in French and I know that, for the most part, you would use the passe simple. However, if you are trying to express an action that is more in the past than your simple past verb, should you use the plus-que-parfait? For example, if I am writing about a woman who is thinking about her son was he was younger and how, on one occasion, he begged his father for a ...

I'm hoping to try to say: All of a sudden, she remembered her husband but that was ten years ago. That night (as in, that particular night ten years ago), their son wanted a toy to play with.

Would a bit of comedy and dressing up/acting out be a starting point?  I'm not a French specialist but I'm thinking of telling a story in the past tense with realia or a ppt (whatever floats your boat), getting kids to question each other and possibly a short write up/gap fill kinda thing to show progress....

Totally confused, every single word I see goes well with both avoir and etre so I can't seem to know which words go with etre or avoir because they all flow too well... Oh jeeze help me. Why do some words only go with etre and some only go with avoir? Why just why can't they just keep it as ONE alone with either etre or avoir, they complicate everything so much and now I am lost!

Bonjour, Is it true or false that in a book it says: When verbs descendre, monter, passer, rentrer, and retourner have a direct object, they use the auxliary avoir I have never heard of this before and would like to know if it's actually correct. Merci mille fois!

According to context, Je n'ai pas lu de roman or Je n'ai pas lu un roman is the right translation of I have not read a book . You are right, * Je n'ai lu pas un roman is wrong.

Ce que vous avez à faire est supprimer le groupe complément "sa chemise blanche" as you would do it in English using "it". Il ne l' a pas mis e . (with agreement in feminine gender because l' is placed before the past participle used with auxiliary "avoir")

I'm afraid we need more context because without further information I would use the imparfait… Cette nuit-là, leur fils voulait un jouet… Could you please provide us with the English sentence that comes right after this one?
