What's the deal with parentheses in song titles? I don't get it. Songs like "(Just Like) Starting Over" or "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone". Why not just call them "Starting Over" or "Stepping Stone"? Or "Just Like Starting Over" or "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone"? Are DJ's on the radio supposed to say "And we just heard John Lennon, open parentheses just like close parentheses starting over." ?...

Hi, I recently needed to parse text via JS and I found rather weird behavior of match() method. More exactly when using global match flag together with capturing parentheses. I didn't find any examples of this, and I am not sure if it is something that should be called JS bug, or rather my misunderstanding. This is just silly example, and it should match all alphanumeric characters ...

Hi I wonder what is the difference between back quotes and dollar parentheses in shell scripts. For example, what is the difference between: nb_lines=$(cat some_file | wc -l) and nb_lines=`cat some_file | wc -l` Is there something different in newline/blanks treatment ? Or maybe compatibility issues between different shells ? Thank you very much

Please help me clarify the different cases for use of commas, dashes (just found out they're called em dashes), and parentheses. It seems that some of the distinction is ambiguous--or at least there is an option to use more than one. For example, just now, could I have used a comma or parentheses to separate the two clauses of the last sentence I wrote here. That's not the perfect example ...
I recently ran into a request (that I have seen before) about putting two statistics into the same cell. Apparently, APA Style requires this type of report that has the N in the same cell as the percent (with the percent in parentheses). Each cell would look like this: xx,xxx (xx%) using the comma format for the N and the percent format for the percent. The way I would ...

I'm having this weird issue with using parentheses in my paragraph and saving the post. Here is the exact text that is causing the problem: Judge Sowder said he liked the military tribunal system -without criticizing the decision to try them in New York- because the defendants were at war with the US. I had to replace the parenthesis with a dash "-" even on this post in the forum. If...
