Pakbeng guesthouses We're planning to get to Luang Prabang via the Chiang Khong border crossing and slow boat down the Mekong. We've got two kids in tow and have just persuaded their grandmother to come along as well, so we're more concerned than usual about standards...

Email reply from Cyril Boucher the French manager of Pakbeng Lodge: I have 24-hour elctricity in my hotel and hot water. No rates low sesaon, the high season start and in few days will be the peak season Best regards Cyril So I guess that's out for the max $40/night crowd. LP guidebook incorrectly has Pakbeng Lodge at $30 but it's actually about $75/night. Note that Pakbeng now has mains ...

Slow boat trip Hi Guys, I'm really curious about the slow boat up the Mekong and would love to hear from someone who has done the trip. Is it bearable or not worth it. We have the time to spare...How far is it from Pakbeng overland to Luang Prabang? Can anyone ...

There seem to be two options one nearly three times as much as the other. Has anyone used either and can give some feedback please. Both seem to offer the same trip, overnight in the same place, Pak Bang / Pakbeng. 1 - Luang Say - Mekong River Cruise, Euro 283 2 - The Nagi of Mekong, THB.4,600 about Euro 93 To me it seems a no brainer on price but am I missing something? Thanks

First of all I admire your Dad to do it with you, it will be so much fun for you guys... man I wish I can do that with my Dad! As for the bike shops in BKK... If I may, I have two more adresses for you, you might want to check them out: Probike, the most famous bike shop in BKK, best selection in town, good location but a little expensive compare to others (still cheaper than home). It's ...

Predominant power outlet type I am about to leave for Laos in a few days for a four week visit. I have been having some difficulty in ascertaining what is the predominant type of power outlet used. The Lonely Planet guide states that Laos uses 220V AC circuitry and “...

No idea about time adjustment if you include LNT. Huay Xai- LP: Huay Xai- Pakbeng, 1 day Pakbeng- Udom Xai (by truck), 1 day Udom Xai- Phongsali, 1 day Phongsali- Hat Sa- Muang Khua, 1 day Muang Khua- Luang Pabang, 2 days (boat) If you leave out Phongsali, Udom Xai- Muang Khua is also 1 day.

1a. I quite like the Mekong between HX and LP. One day (on the slowboat) is enough though. From Pakbeng get land transport to Udom Xai, on to Muang Khua, then come down the Nam Ou. The stretch from Stung Treng to Kampong Cham in Cambodia follows the Mekong but mostly you don't ever see it. If you had the luxury of time you could island hop down to Kratie then follow the old road to KC via ...

Phetsokxai ("pet sok sai") in Pakbeng is a good mid-range newer hotel overlooking the river. They don't usually take bookings (no website, just phone +856 81212299 and fax +856 81212629) but they have many rooms and Pakbeng has about 30 guesthouses overall with more rooms being built almost constantly. The bottleneck will be Luang Prabang over new years - just means probably having to do some ...

In March/April 2006 we got the boat downriver from Houaxai to Luang Prabang. It took two days during which we sailed through thick smoke virtually all the way (imagine sitting next to a smoky bonfire with the wind blowing in the wrong direction). We stayed overnight in Pakbeng and watched the farmers set the forest alight on the opposite bank. The next morning everywhere was covered in ...
