Planning a California trip Spring 2010. What is the best month for seeing flowers, planted and wild, along the PCH from San Diego to San Francisco? How many days?

We're planning a drive down Highway 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles sometime between the beginning of May and the end of June 2010. We assume that the roads, etc would be less crowded before kids are out on Summer recess. Does anyone know when school lets out in California at the end of school year 2009-2010?

Just trying to decide on which company to go with - we're staying in Brasilito so will need transportation to and from the hotel (I know Pacific Coast Divers provides this but not sure about Aquacenter at the Flamingo Marina Resort?) Pacific Coast seems to be $90 if you have your own gear and $100 if you need some, but I'm not sure on prices for Aquacenter? If people have ...

Mayfeen -- I agree with Lisi (#7) that long distance travel is a budget buster. Also, if it is done for too many days, over excess distances, it generates "travel burnout". Interjet.com charges the peso equivalent of about US $130 on way for Tuxtla Gutierrez (in Chiapas) to Mexico City. Their fare for Mexico City -Tijuana is the same. As other posters have pointed out, you should save ...

The only prohibited on HWY one is at Oxnard south thru Malibo, dot got tired of us bypassing the scales, San Luis Obispo north is not prohibitive, its not recommended for anything 40 ft to KP, but you can still run it, no truckstops on there at all, resturants galore, bring money in most cases, Big Sur just below Montery is worth a stop, Ragged point is a good spot to eat, truck parking is ...

My picture of the Carlsbad flower fields got published in Fodors California! You have to detour off the freeway, springtime is best (say March/April). There are also flower fields around Lompoc (west of Solvang) that are a bit later and run longer, May/June is best but there are fields throughout the summer. The Chamber publishes this map http://69.89.22.138/~lompocco/images/flower%...
