I was just wondering what people's opinions were on this? I don't really want one, but over here in the US apparently they're routine as part of the first appointment.

I'm 63 had hysterectomy 3 years ago after doc found benign ovarian tumor. Why would I need to go back to doc for pap smear and exam? The exams are so painful, I bleed and am so anxious.

A little backround, I'm 44 years old, and have three children. I had a 5 cm. cyst removed form ovary 18 years ago. Other than that, nothing abnormal until a couple of years ago. I was told I had a enlarged fibrous uterous, but I had no symptoms....It was just a routine exam. (had a sonogram, that confirmed the fibroids). Anyway, I had some heavy bleeding this week after intercourse. (it...

Hello; I just had my first gyno exam & pap smear last month since my hysterectomy (Uterus, cervix removed;kept ovaries, A&P repairs) back in July 2008. They called me yesterday and said there were abnormal cells, HPV results were negative. I asked if it was pre-cancerous and she said yes but 'sometimes cells heal themselves'. (that seems odd to me) I have to go back...

I am 60 years old and have never had a abnormal pap test. I recently went to my Family Dr. for my annual pap. The first pap he did came back "unsatisfactory". He then took another and it also came back unsatisfactory with thickening of the cells. I had a partial hysterectomy when I was 31 years old and still have my ovaries. I am not able to take any hormones because I had a blood clot years...

To me i would want to know if i had a cancer growing up there that could get fixed, where as leaving it could cause huge complications. It also tests for infections, not just strep B. I think its almost comparable to some pretty rough sex women have had while being pregnant. Almost all womens cervix's are strong enough to hold in a baby for 9 months to me i dont think it will miss a couple of ...

I am way confused on this. I am glad you asked this question and this will be a question I asked my surgeon (gyn/onc) when I have my last followup with him in February. When I had my 2nd opinion with an ob/gyn she said once I was done with my surgeon that I could comeback and she would do my yearlys. To me after all the pre-cancerous stuff and every other we have...

At least I know that it is becoming more of a standard procedure. I thank you for that bit of information. I've got to call and make the appointment for the vaginal ultrasound. It will be a nerve wracking couple of weeks while I wait for the results from the pap smear/HPV and sonogram! Barbara

not only can they detect certain types of vaginal cancers. It also catches such things as bacterial infections and not the kind you get from sexual activity. Sometimes our hormones go out of whack and we get overproduction of our flora. Sometimes, you may not even know its taking place. It also gives you piece of mind, always better to be proactive with our health.

I had an abnormal pap smear with pre-cancerous cell growth on my cervix back in 2000. They did further testing and ended up doing a LEEP, which is a heat procedure to scrape my cervix. It was painless, though if I remember right they did numb me. I've had my second child since then and #3 on the way. My best advice to you just stay by her side. You could offer to go to doc appt with her ...
