I am currently taking Organic Chemistry I and we are using the textbook "Organic Chemistry" by Janice Smith. Please post what text your class was assigned and whether you attended a four year college or CC. The problems in the Smith text seem VERY easy. Has anyone else taken Organic I using her text? What do you think about the difficultly level ?

1. An unknown sample was crystallized from benzene. On cooling to 0 degrees C in an ice bath, the amount of crystalline material seen in the flask was quite large but upon filtration it seemed to disappear. Explain? 2. A solid substance P is soluble in water (1g/100mL) at 25 degrees and 10g/100mL of water at 100 degrees. You are given a sample that contains 10 g of P and an impurity G. If ...

What does anyone know about CHM 2200 (NOT 2210)? I looked it up on the registrar and it looks like it's only offered for the fall. My major wants me to take it next fall. Is it much easier than 2210, or about the same? Thanks
Okay so we inverted test tubes in a beaker, and collected gas by calcium carbide, and the gas is ethyne. We had 3 test tubes, and three of them, we used to collect the gas. one test tube, I filled the test tube 1/12 full with gas formed by calcium carbide, which is ethyne. I was wondering if anyone knows why 1/12 results in a complete combustion, while the other test tubes were filled with ethyne...

Question 1 Petroleum is mixture of many types of hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons can be isolated through fractional distillation of petroleum. A compound alkane E is in the form of gas at room temperature and can completely burn in oxygen. It exists as many isomers. a) What is the meaning of hydrocarbon? b) Alkane E has a relative molecular mass of 58. What is the formula of compound E? c)...

I'm taking two Organic Chemistry classes this semester (One for science majors and one for BME majors which is very condensed and all we have to do is memorize reactions o.O). Unfortunately, I'm having trouble with both classes urgh. Any study tips for Organic Chemistry? Any good Organic Chem videos or materials? All I have been doing is reading the chapters and taking notes. My schedule is ...

D went to very small private HS known for its superior prep for college. We had kids driving as long as an hour one way from another state on a daily basis. School has always placed 100% of graduates into 4 year colleges. Maybe that made a diff. However, all college Bio classes and Orgo have been very challenging. D had both Honors and AP Bio in HS (AP - "5" on exam) and her Honors Bio used ...

Quote: How do you come to the conclusion why certain mechanisms are the way they are? This is a fascinating study in and of itself, but if you're curious (and you have the time!), the Clayden book I recommended to you has a good overview (Chapter 41). Short answer: kinetic studies, isotope effects and labeling, and structure-activity relationships (Hammett ...

It is easier than CHM2210 considering CHM2200 is Basic Organic Chemistry, so you are not subjected to the tediousness that is often associated with CHM2210 (which is the major weed-out prereq needed for prospective Pre-Health professional students)
