Recently, a poster on this board attempted to prove that oil companies are gouging prices by offering the example that follows as proof of concept. He further went on to argue that only government intervention, not economic forces, could stop the evil oil companies. His logic seemed to match that of many others on this board, and so I felt it particularly appropriate to bring this ...

I just wanted to offer a great big thank you to the most generous group in the united states, the oil companies. exxon made $40 billion dollars in profits in 2007. they also paid $30 billion in taxes. something you hear little about. do an internet search for "exxon profits." then do one for "exxon taxes." see which is the more popular search. the oil companies have a very low profit margin. I ...

The oil companies already have plenty of places to drill including off shore. Are you really so ignorant that all you can do is echo talking points? You ever think of this issue from a business perspective? No doubt you're ignorant of business too because if you looked at the business model for the oil companies you wouldn't find any difference between them and any other exploration ...

I wanted the take on the facts(?) quoted by the author of the article. I smell BS myself but sometimes these ultra left types stumble on something and I wanted to know if there is any substance to their allegations. To me it looks like something that would be published in the 'Onion', just enough fact to be plausible and the rest flights of fancy.

Obviously, as you indicated in your question, if we raise their costs (taxes), they'll raise their prices. We have unfortunately build our whole economic infrastructure on cheap energy - and cheap energy is no ...

The biggest problem will be on the economy as a whole not just oil. Tens of millions of jobs will be lost worldwide, taxes will be higher and times will just get harder. Plus it would be useless.
