Quote: Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg is worried. It's not that he thinks the LHC will create a black hole that will engulf the planet, or even that the restart will end in a technical debacle like last year's. No: he's actually worried that the LHC will find what some call the "God particle", the popular and embarrassingly grandiose moniker for the hitherto ...

I recall a few years ago meeting an old family friend who moved to Tennessee when I was just five years old. 20 years later, we sat and chatted, and she said: "those blacks. they keep moving in our neighbourhoods and we keep moving away. we just can't get rid of them". No word of a lie. She was a Greek immigrant to Canada when I knew here, and an immigrant to the US. I, as a Canadian,...

Weinberg did a talk at CERN a few months ago. It's the only time I've only seen a lecture theatre full about 20 minutes before the start of the lecture (I believe it filled a lot faster for Hawking but I wasn't there). No-one understood much but he seemed to have found a plausible way of potentially reconciling the SM and gravity without any weird stuff.

The U.S. economy “is groggy, but it’s getting to its ...

More troops is the wrong decision. You've got a government that will not police their own. It's unbelievable we've spent as long in the Middle East as we have. This one will go down as worse than Vietnam. It appears as if we are actually supporting the Taliban. We are in a recession/depression, we are arguing over providing health care to US citizens and then we are pissing away money in the ...
