( Dear Hv, My brother was told by his doctor that he may have to take medicine to lower triglycerides. His triglycerides is twice the normal range \(see below\). The same doctor told him to take niacin to lower cholesterol. My questions are: \(1\) Does niacin also lower triglycerides as well as cholesterol? \(2\) If niacin helps, which kind of niacin is to take? Flush-free or ...

Hi, Shereen, I enjoy your newsletters and always look forward to seeing the next one in my inbox. I'm writing about your 16 Nov 2009 article on Niacin and Zetia. I'm a fountain of cholesterol production even on a Ornish/vegetarian diet. My cardiologist has me on 2000mg of Niaspan a day, in addition to Vytorin following bouts of A-fib. I've been doing the Niaspan since 2004. The "flush" ...

Niacin Trumps Ezetimibe as Adjunct to Chronic Statin Therapy Key Points: ?Adding niacin to statin therapy reduces arterial thickness, clinical events more than adding ezetimibe ?Strange finding: Patients with greatest LDL reductions on ezetimibe have worst thickening ?Further research needed to understand effect of niacin plus statins on clinical outcomes By ...

From Heartwire Niacin Not Beneficial in Patients at Goal With Statins: NIA Plaque Michael O'Riordan November 18, 2009 (Orlando, Florida) ? The addition of niacin to statin therapy in secondary-prevention patients resulted in a significant improvement in LDL- and HDL-cholesterol levels but failed to significantly alter atherosclerotic disease progression as measured by MRI, compared with...

Mom was reading diabetes for dummies and read about high doses of niacin (she took high doses of flush free niacin about 10 years ago for cholesterol) possibly contributing to her having T2 . I'm curious if anyone else with T2 took niacin for cholesterol. I never took niacin. T2 runs in our family and Mom is aware of this. She believes she would have eventually developed the disease ...

Ever have one? It is pretty weird. I am having one now. Your skin turns beat red and you feel like you have a sunburn. I actually took two slo-niacin pills(it is for cholesterol) instead of the recommended one. LOL @ myself

I didn't want to derail the last thread by going off on a tangent, so I'm starting a new thread. This was mentioned: Regular old vitamin B3 is more effective and safer than statins when supplemented in dosages higher than you can get from food. There are several forms of niacin--does anyone know the best one to take to avoid going on a statin? I thought it was "flush-free niacin," but then...

My triglycerides are kinda high, and my C-RP is off-the-chart high. I don't eat a lot of fat (I've cut way back on cheese in particular). Oof. You may be one of those who need meds then. Good luck in your pursuit of the natural remedy. I hope it works for you. IP

Anyone currently taking this for themselves or their LOs for AD? Any feedback? I was given an Rx for it for my Mother(by cardiologist for chol), but at the time she was having problems with the std niacinimide caps that I had her on. I believe the problem was flushed face/heat even with aspirin & uneasiness that created a panic state.

quote: Originally posted by JAB: Some are taking it, but as far as I know, nobody has seen any really great results. I don't like all the possible side effects, either -- there are more than just the liver toxicity. By the way, my husband's geriatrician wanted him on a med for hyperlipidemia, but he's had a bad reaction to statins in the past and I didn't want to risk it. Geriatrician ...

So, it looks like we agree, lowering LDL alone doesn't help.Raising HDL alone doesn't help and may actually increase coronary artery disease (see torcetrapib).Lowering LDL and raising HDL together has been done already, combining statins and niacin.Inconclusive at best? That is why I stated in my original post that IVUS better show a reduction in plaque and not just raise HDL and lower LDL, or ...

I adapted this recipe from CL and it turned out great. A serving size is small yet hearty. Multigrain Pilaf with Sunflower Seeds Sunflower seeds and brown rice pack a double nutrition punch, enhancing this side dish with both vitamin E and niacin. This recipe calls for long-cooking barley and brown rice, but if you're in a hurry, substitute ...
