I've always been a firm believer in spaying and neutering, but I read some articles that concern me. Mind you, I've never had a male dog before. I was reading that vets really only discuss the benefits and ignore a lot of the risks in regard to this. (I am not trying to offend anyone on here). There was mention that certain cancers and cognative problems are actually higher in neutered ...

Hi there, I'm looking for information on the pros and cons of neutering a dog. Obviously being that I'm looking to "neuter" versus "spade, the dog is male - 6 month old Black Lab. Personal experience would be great as well as would any links to any articles (medical and otherwise), websites, or threads referring to this particular topic. The dog in question is a lovely, correct Black Lab who ...

My German Shepherd dog is 18 months old and I am planning on having him neutered. The vet I use has quoted $450 for a routine neutering which seems high. I live in Northern Virginia and would appreciate recommendations for where I can get him neutered economically without compromising on his safety. Thanks

Well, one person had advised me against it. They had said that after neutering their dog at an older age(7 or 8) the dog developed incontinence problems and was never again the same. But I was sick and tired of having an intact male, I am indeed very proud that all my animals are spayed and neutered, and I didn't want to risk the health concerns of keeping my dog intact. Well, lo and behold,...

There are several threads on neutering here and this might apply to all of them. This is for male dogs. As someone rightly pointed out, no one can tell you whether their boy now behaves better because they neutered him because if they did they no longer know how he behaves as an intact. Maybe he would just have matured into better behaviour anyway, maybe not. But now, if you think your male ...

I know it's fashionable to neuter pets. It's also a responsible practice. However, I think there are circumstances that would justify not neutering an animal. I have a 7 month old Chow, as some of you might remember (I don't post often). He is scheduled to be neutered tommorow. But now I am having reservations and am leaning toward not going through with it. I got my Chow partly as a ...

I had Dagan to the vet today and was talking about making his neutering appointment and this particular vet (I've seen 3 different ones at this office so far) mentioned that they're suggesting waiting until 13 months of age to neuter. They still suggest the 6-8 months as well but are giving clients to information and letting them choose. The reason for the 13 months is because of bone and ...

I have never had a boy dog neutered, as all have come to me already plumless.... I only have exerience if spaying. I was just wondering, are the exercise restrictions after neutering the same for the boys, or can they be more active more quickly......as it is not major abdominal surgery? Bruin is going in this friday for his neutering. I will say that I'm nervous for him. I want to get this done before the really hot weather arrives and before I start doing overtime at work.. I've never had a dog neutered before so this is all new to me.. What should I be asking the vets office? Any serious concerns that I should have or look for? The "WOOFERS" here know everything ...

Thanks! I had 3 kitties in the past who got the uriniary blockage despite plenty of water and wet canned food. Two needed surgery and one died. I think the cat food has lower ash than way back then. There were alot of bad brands decades ago. Ahh yes...the pom poms! Thanks for bringing that up! I want those left too! If the vet does not do that I will take him to another vet! Yes I ...

I have to wonder on the head structure. Many of my puppies, although intact, had pointy faces by a year old. Perhaps they would have been worse if spay/neutered by 6 months. Another argument for later, at least some puppies, is that 6 months is far too young to choose breeding stock if you want the best. Many health issues show up later.

Well....Elijah does have an infection, probably from licking himself. I am glad I took him. Its not bad, but they put him on Amoxocillan, and I need to watch him. No problem...I just hope he feels better soon!

I would neuter a JRT around 5-6 months. Let him get old enough that his plumbing is fully developed, yet not quite into puberty. You'll notice missing teeth around 4½ months give or take.
I would also recommend neutering, but it may/may not help with the so-called "punk" behaviour. I think some remedial socialization and training need to happen there. A dog that has shown ANY kind of aggression, should NEVER be bred, no matter how good looking or conformationally correct they may be.
