I am putting together all the things I want to bring back and install on the boat (waiting for me on the hard in Antigua) after the hurricane season ends. One device that is quite useful in Europe is the NAVTEX system and from the charts I see that there is only one station in the Caribbean. Is it of practical use in the Caribbean and in the Pacific or does it remain mainly a European system?

I just found out that the PACTOR "factory" is about 20 minutes by car from where I am, so I will opt out of navtex and inmarsat and add the PACTOR to my SSB and add some more minutes to my Iridium account. I might still do the NAVTEX coupled to the chartplotter if I decide to head to Europe this season.

The easiest local NOAA radio which I think almost every VHF FM radio has, next your radar can help, XM/SIRIUS marine weather subscription hooked to a chartplotter and a NAVTEX receiver as long as your not in the Great Lakes. Also most of the time the USCG will report bad weather on channel 16. Bill

Quote: Hard to say that about what we have seen so far in the Med. Equally the chandlery's are few and far between and most have less stock than a small chandlery in Joly Harbour, Antigua. Worse, what they have is poor quality and very expensive. You mustnt have looked very far, Given that most marine manufactuer, ie electronics etc are european, ...

The hull truth has it's own politics. Panbo does not. Ben and I correspond. I contribute with my tests. I have a few questions do you want plotters that can be seen in direct sunlight? How about intuative and easy to use? Please consider almost all add on will be NMEA2000 in the future. Would you like a chartplotter you can update from your laptop by simply going to the manufactures website and ...

Nail, I like to tinker so my system is in a constant state of "not done yet", but the truth is it will never be done, I just add to it as I have the time, change things, etc. Everybody has hobbies, and one of my hobbies is my boat's computer system. It appear that someone here is very mad of H-Bird... It also appear that his impression regarding installation of this parts or sonars got it in a wrong direction, which his message sound like he ''might'' be the only PRO talking about this units.. Well, my impression is that our discussion got nothing to do with advertisment, and stop right at quality and more issues.. I did installed everything...

Mingat's right to try and clarify the question, which has two parts: (i) where are you trying to be the US, Europe, Indonesia, the Coconut Milk Run, 2K nM from land or in an anchorage with land on 3 sides? and (ii) what do you want to be able to do - plain text emails and maybe grib files is a different proposition from eg uploading pix to a blog, or exchanging large docs as part of a business....
