So Tyler has the beginnings of mud fever. Just started at the very bottom of his back legs. One slightly worse than the other. Had been hoping to avoid it this year, but failed miserably. Fortantely YO says he can wander about the yard while getting mucked out so will still get to stretch his legs, rather than being kep on almost box rest. Now, I usually solve the problem but washing ...

I have what I would consider a chronic case of mud fever on my gelding. I have searched the archives and there was a post in May 8, 2009 that is very helpful. My question is when a horse may have a "hypersensitivity/allergic component" could you find this out via a blood test? I believed at one point when it first started in July that it may be a photosensitivy issue...but now that my horse is ...

Hello, A few months ago my horse developed scabby, flaky skin on his ankles, pasterns and coronet band. At first I thought it was mud fever so I would brush it and apply penaten. Now it is dry out, there is no more mud and his legs seems to be getting worse! 1. The scabs on his pasterns bleed if they come off and they always come back! Since the scabs become open I have moved away from the ...

Am I right thinking that horses with feathers are more likely to get mud fever? I have a Dales and this is our first winter together. Don't know if he's got it before, but am thinking I should start treating him with pig oil or something before he gets it. My farrier told me to buy a mud gaurd feed supplement. Does that work? If horses with feathers are more prone, Why? I mean the ...
