The mobile modems are cheaper and faster than fixed line broadband. Is there a wireless router into which I can plug and use the mobile USB modem? This would give the best of both worlds! I would be thinking of an Eircom, O2 or Vodafone service.

Agreed, occasional unauthorized tethering is one thing, but doing it on a full-time basis is a really bad idea, not to mention very detrimental to the network and your neighbor's user experience. Tether responsibly!
