Were or are there any other .45 semi auto pistols in the military other than the Colt 1911? Somone mentioned one in special forces, but other than that no one has been able to answer specifially.

There is a very interesting essay in today's NY Times about the European Theater which speculates that had US forces positioned to do so crossed the Rhine in 1944 at about this time, the Battle of the Bulge would not have occurred, and Germany would have fallen much more quickly. The author blames Eisenhower for timidity on the decision to commit the troops. I do not know enough on the subject to...

Ok, since there seem to be a lot of military history buffs on here, has anyone read some decent books on the subject to recommend? I'm reading Barbara Tuchman's "The Guns of August" about the start of WWI and "Behind Japanese Lines" by Richard Dunlop, which is about the OSS in Burma during WWII. The latter is out of print, I believe.

Depending on how much stock you put in Internet discussions, certain specialized units of the US Military used (at one time) Glock 21's. Not sure if those are still in use or not.
