I have been wanting to do some low key work but with out a hairlight I was stuck with photos like this (Shot with the 18-55 kit lens very soft) So I got my hair light and practiced last night (Shot with Sigma 30mm has a slight front focusing issue) but my room is small and it seems to me that the light is too strong. It is on its lowest setting but it is so close to my wife's head ...

Hi all, newbie here, be gentle I came across this forum, had a browse and thought I'd sign up and post :) I saw Harry Brown yesterday, which was a really fantastic british film, kept me gripped from start to finish. It made me realise I love that "style" of british film that you rarely get from american films IMO. That sort of low key, slow, gritty urban style. It's hard ...

Ken loach, Meadows are great for starters. Unfortunately for every good (gritty) British film there are two awful ones trying to mirror that gritty style. Basically middle class directors looking at urban/working class life as if it was a Zoo. Someone mentioned Red Road which is excellent, as is Arnold's next film "Fish Tank". 'Neil by Mouth' is a pretty decent. Do yourself a favor ...

Ray Leonard's Russian colleagues at Rosneft(?) described Ray as being very low key to the point they wondered how he was continually getting another deal signed. I remember they described him as continually snaring someone and doing a deal without saying much about it. The Russians liked Ray so much they routinely invited him and his family to the inner circle parties of the top three executives....

We are dropping her off around noon tomorrow, and will have the rest of the day, night and 1/2 day on Sunday to fill before picking her back up Sunday afternoon. I've reserved a room at the Doubletree Hotel- Northlake tomorrow night, but that's the extent of our plans. We've ...

Re: Low Key shots of Chesdin and Denali Thanks everyone! Zeiff and StarfishSaving - We did it in our living room with all the lights off and a black bed sheet in the background. We have the Nikon D40 and used the SB 600 speedlight flash into a photo umbrella. We used 1/4 power flash and were about 4 ft away from Denali. The umbrella was about 3 ft above the dog. PS ...

I don't know if there is a 100% rule everyone would all agree on. To me though, there is so much of your subject exposed to a recognizable level that its more like just a dark background. To me, there should be tons of black and just enough detail to discern the subject. Great shot though.
