Couldn't find my wheel bearing grease but had some lithium grease laying around so I used that for my cog and lockring. If you are unfamiliar, its thicker and stickier than regular grease. Used on suspension and bushings for cars usually. Is this OK for my cog/lockring or for any reason should I clean it off?

Afternoon I'm attempting to change the cassette on the my Trek (see other thread). I have the tools (lockring thingy, and chain whip), but no matter how much force I put into it, the lockring doesnt seem to want to move. Im pretty sure im turning it the right way (opposite way to the Lock arrow). I'm going to take it into my LBS tomorrow to see if they can sort it. However...

Did you torque the cassette lockring down to spec? Did you fully seat the wheel in the dropouts and tighten the QR? If so, I would think it will work the same as your SR cassette.

You slide the fork boot down, undo the lockring and let the lockring and flat washer drop down, undo the bolt on top, on the triple clamp, and the whole fork assembly will drop out of the fork tube. Clean the old grease thoroughly off everything, liberally recoat the springs with new grease, and reassemble. HERE is a microfiche diagram of the front fork assembly.
