When loanwords enter hebrew (both modern and talmudic) the choices for transcribing letters strike me a little odd. Example: Cyprus - קיפריסין ק and ט both used to e pronounced with emphatic semitic phonemes far from resembling the /k/ and /t/ that they are used for. Even yiddish uses these two. Why were they chosen for this and not כ and ת? Anyone?

I lived in Kenya some twenty five years ago, and I learned Swahili then, although I've forgotten a great deal of it. Swahili does indeed have a great number of Arabic loan words. For example, the words for the numbers after the number five are mostly from Arabic. Most learned or bookish words in Swahili come from Arabic. In fact, in some earlier descriptions Swahili was defined as an Arabic...

That's an interesting list, Don. Perhaps i'm overly picky, but i make a distinction between proper names that are translated phonetically and actual loan words.

Heh. When I wrote my own book, it was based around a kingdom that was the only known habitation on the planet, so there wouldn't be any loan words. So even though this wasn't Earth so the book was certainly a translation of their language, and even though you can't write English itself without using loan words, my mind kept rebelling any time there was anything that seemed too loany. What ...
