I ask because I'd really like to add an LCD monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 to my system, but since I don't care about non-console games, 3D effects, or compiz, I was wondering what's the best way to upgrade my system to be able to handle 1920x1080 smoothly without breaking the bank to do a full system rebuild. I think I have an OK computer, but am still not able to run games like crysis on high settings (super lag)... what component of my computer is limiting the performance? my specs: Intel Core 2 duo 3.00ghz 2046mb RAM ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Vista.... What can I improve that will make the most difference?

You need to evaluate where a bottleneck is right now and if the extra CPU's will even help. If you're not CPU limited no point in spending the extra money for CPU's you're not going to use. So if CPU is not the limiting factor save the money and get the one with just a single quad core with the bigger drives.
