Saltwater & Reef - Getting Started

OK, third question since yesterday... Just tryin to figure out my problem here... Before starting out my 10g nano last month, I researched every site I could find regarding lava rock and salt water aquariums... Even asked several different LFSes in my area. I got more "go aheads" than I got "don't do it" so I decided that I was going to give it a shot since I had two huge chunks of it. I...

Hey, I got these 2 big chunks of red lava rock for my 55g tanganykina tank and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to sculpt it. I was going to use a dremel tool and maybe a chisel and a hammer. How does that sound?

So i got a bag of small lava rock for my fry tanks. i love the look but due to my inherent laziness i didnt really clean it like i should have, the water is clearing up but will the dust off the lava rock hurt my fry? its too late now, but what should i expect?

Lake Malawi Species

I was playing on the internet this morning and read an article that said: 'you may get some side benefits from using it (lava rock): after it has been in place for six months or so, you may witness some slow decline in nitrate in the aquarium. This is due to de-nitrification carried on by certain bacteria, deep in recesses of lava rock, where the water is anoxic. If you pull out the rock ...

I finally found some rock for my tanks that is 'local' for me to get. In Louisiana you can't go outside and just find rocks to clean to put in your tanks. Generally, you have to buy it. But rural Louisiana doesn't have landscape places you can go buy rock at. Today my two teens and I headed to the nearest large town an hour away to see a movie. On the outside of the town we passed a sign for a ...

Aquarium Decoration (Rocks, Plants and Substrates)
Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago (2009-11-15 19:15:00)  by FlyHigh
I'm starting a 100 gal tank and would like to use lava rock for caves and aquascaping. To minimize the cost, like some people, I went to my local nursery/landscaping dealer to purchase lava rock rather then pay a lot for the small pieces at the local pet store. I bought 2 large lava rocks, each was about 3 ft long and 1 ft across for $12 a piece. I kept breaking them on the ground until I got...

Plumeria

For what it is worth, we put plain old boring red lava rock on top of the generic potting soil her potted plumerias were in and they took off like rockets! They had been malingering along for the better part of two years (bought as cuttings, but took their sweet time doing anything). Within two weeks of the lava "mulch" they were growing enthusiasically, & looking fabulous - large lush green ...
