Do they make a fitting that would allow the tub drain on one side of the joist (a hole then trough the joists) and the overflow on the otherside. My Joists are TJ's so I can't notch them, hole has to be closer to center so the drian fitting "L" (tub shoe?) needs to be longer at the top before it turns. IS there such a fitting, is it allowed? OR, is is allowed to "T" the drain...

I'm trying to find out the probable chord widths for steel joists (K, LH, & DLH). I understand that these will vary depending on the steel angle sizes (plus the gap between the 2 angles) used for the chords for each steel joist type. Therefore, I'm looking for ballpark ranges for each joist type. If this info is not available, can someone tell me what the range of angle sizes used for each ...

Home is 15 years old. Note the new vapor barrier lapped and taped 2' up all the walls and piers. Insulation was new also. This is NOT a conditioned crawl space. (1st time for me seeing this type of coating on floor joists. Thought others may learn from it. I'll tell you what I said about it later.)

Hi, I want to insulate my loft properly, the stuff that's up there at the moment is pretty ropey, been there since the house was built in the 80s. The recommended depth is 270mm, which will put it well above my joists. But, like most people I guess, my loft is part-boarded and I store quite a lot of stuff up there. What's the best thing to do? Presumably ramming the ...

I just wanted to gain any best practice regarding copper and plastic pipe runs when Notching/drilling Holes in Joists. I am well aware of the Building Regulations when it comes to Notching/Drilling, but just wondering if there is anything else poeple do different i.e do you prefer plastic and drill holes or copper and Notch? Do you use any type of lagging/felt to prevent water hammer, expansion ...

Hi I just bought a house and I am having a problem with cracking Roof Joists. The Ridge Beam is a 2x5 and the Roof Joists are 2x8. The problem is when the house was constructed they only nailed the top half of the Roof Joist to the ridge beam. As a result over time snow loads and Roofer slamming shingles down the joist are developing cracks. One has already cracked and is hanging from the ...

Hi, After lots of searching about what is and isn't recommended for insulating and boarding lofts I'm a bit confused about what I can do. My plans is to raise my ceiling joists using either 2x2 or 2x4 timber on top of the joists (not at right angles as some people have said), lay as much insulation as needed & then board over the top. Combined with my existing joists it ...

Hi, If you look at the joist on the far right of: http://photos.dionic.net/v/public/bu..._0016.jpg.h tml you'll see that it is a 4x2" stacked on top of the original 4x2" ceiling joist before the roof was converted to a dormer. I have a few like this, mostly in placed where the builder thought it was too hard to put in 8x2s for some reason... I'm proposing to plate these both ...

Evening all, and Happy New year ! I've got a bit of a dilemma with my loft insulation and would welcome suggestions. My House is a late 70's build and the loft members are only 70mm deep. At present there's some blown insulation in there, but it's practically non-existent where there has been traffic. What I am keen to do is lay insulation so that I end up with a warm loft and...

Single story rear addition approximately 12' wide over crawlspace. The rear "foundation" was comprised of vertical 2x4's resting on a single untreated 2x4 placed on the concrete slab. The supporting sill plate is a single thickness 2x4 set flat accross the verticals! Joists are set on the 2x4 "sill', with noticeable bowing of the 2x4's. Better yet, some of the sills are only toe nailed to the ...

Hello gentlemen- What is the best way to insulate a wood floor over a crawlspace? The building is 14 x 24' located in Kansas City. The floor joists are 2x10" on 16" centers. The building is heated and air-conditioned. The only access to the crawlspace is a 24x30" opening in the floor. The perimeter foundation is 8" thick PC. There is approximately 16" of space under the joists near the access...

Hi, I have several heat ducts from my furnace in the basement which run parallel and in between the floor joists. The basement is unheated but maintains a temperature of about 55 degrees in the winter. Should I wrap the ducts with a reflective insulating material for that purpose or just nail in insulation between the joists like I was insulating an outer wall. Does it matter? Richard

Does anyone have any details for running deck joists into/onto a shed roof? A client wants me to replace her 2nd story deck, 2/3 of which is attached to the house with a ledger, and 1/3 of which is directly on top of a shed roof over an addition. The existing joists over the shed are cut to tapers and rest directly on the roofing, presumably over the shed rafters. Obviously, I won't be able ...

Any suggestions to rid my basement of mold and condensation between the floor joists?? The house is about 10 years old and they have "tyvek" on the outside but no insulation board. They stuffed a small amount of insulation above the basement walls into the floor joists cavity but now the insulation is wet and mold is growing on the rim joist and the rim joist is cold and wet...... This ...

So, I have 30"+ of vertical space between my stringers and joists (I think I have that correct). I have 4" of insulation...and I live in Chicago. No wonder my house feels like a wind tunnel. I am going to insulate on top of what is already in there. But, should I also cover the HVAC? Seems like it would a felony if I didn't (that was humor.)
