Actually japanese has NO cousins at all. The proposed altaic grouping is just that, speculation and it is not accepted . As it is right now, japanese is a language isolate with NO relatives at all (unless you include ryukyuan languages which are in the japonic language family). Learning hiragana and katakana is easy, it is phonetic.
