Most languages in Europe are related and belong to the Indo-European family of languages. Presumably they inherited this from proto-Indo-European, and English is odd because it lost grammatical gender during the Middle English period (1066-1500) -- Old English (Anglo Saxon) does have grammatical gender. There are other major languages which do not have grammatical gender, e.g. Chinese and ...
