Could someone tell me the cut off amounts that determine the percentage of income tax that we pay? A couple years ago while we had income tax filled out, I remember the accountant mentioning something about this. Not sure if my question is clear, but as an example~making 10,000 to 30,000 would mean that we pay no income tax. Making 30,000 to 40,000 would mean we'd pay 10%, 40,000 to 50,000 ...

I am on maternity leave currently (Started June 2nd and will end Feb 28th) So my earnings to date so far are only currently approx £5900 so will I qualify for the £60 in Sept. My earnings for the whole of the year to end of March 09 are expected to be approx £10k but I have only taken home half of this so far

As Mansarde said, this is about moving taxation off those with assets, to those with income - and those people are often not the same. For me this would be also incredibly difficult to administer, based upon last years income or this/next year - what about dividends etc?
