I posted about my son's IEP meeting about a week ago. I'm so stressed about this process! I have spent hours researching laws, education, and blindness. It is unfare that I am taking so much time from my family to justify the proper education for my son! Why are people so against special schools? I can understand for some issues like behavior or mental disabilities, but not blindness. He ...

I just got DS's new final copy of his IEP to approve. One of the objectives is to maintain eye contact for 20 seconds. DS has sensory problems, and never makes eye contact. What I've read is you shouldn't "make" him do it, because it's a sensory issue, and he won't retain anything said while being forced into such an uncomfortable situation. I want to fight the IEP. That one, and many of ...

My son is 7 in the first grade and has had an IEP since he was 4 in pre-k. Originally there was a behavior plan put in his IEP when he was in pre-k and since he made it through Kindergarten with no major problems (behavior plan followed) they took it out last year. This year my son has had a lot more problems. He started the year constantly eloping. He left school after breakfast at school and ...

My daughters IEP meeting was today, Strange since she was diagnosed with ADHD last fall (1st grade) and just last month started the testing. It's been a long road but I had to fight for her to be put into an integrated classroom, the testing and any services she was getting. She did well on the testing, above average in speech & language, average on the psychological, and average to below ...

I have been struggling with my son's school for a couple of years now. My DS is in the fifth grade and he was diagnosed with Aspergers about 2 1/2 years ago. The Special school district completed an evaluation of him per my request after his doctor diagnosed him. they determined he was not eligible for assistance because he did not meet the eligibilty criteria for an educational disability in ...

On the heels of this thread, from last week when they were sending ds to the principals office and the "time out room" (seclusion room) without my permission... what happened today just blows me away. On Wednesday I had a conversation with the special ed teacher about the use of the seclusion room and I specifically told her that if the need arises for Owen to be in that room (and...

This year, I am very overwhelmed with the number of students in my class along with the number of IEP's. I teach in a charter school which advertises an 18:1 ratio and I think that is stated in our charter. However, I have more than that with a growing number of students on IEP's. I'm getting burnt out and thinking about finding another teaching job in a "regular" public school. What is your ...

Yesterday was Kaitlyn's conference, I sat down with her occupational therapist, the head of her IEP, her reading resource teacher and her teacher. She is doing well in school, everyone loves her, she has a problem with her schedule being messed up...for instance they had an all school walk last week and she was confused because it interuppted her schedule, I was told if she had a meltdown or ...

Our IEP meeting is done. Met all Gabe's new teachers. They seem nice, but kind of clueless. Gabe managed to be a stinker both times his teachers met him. We have Gabe's TSS going to school with him for the entire day. The one thing I am not happy about is the lunch system they use. They serve the children lunch and Gabe is NOT allowed to pack. Gabe is a very picky eater. He won't eat ...

We have an IEP that designates 60 minutes of ST per week. My son -- who has been diagnosed with severe apraxia -- successfully uses an AAC (CheapTalk4) at home. His developmental pediatrician said any ST he gets should consist of "oral motor work." School ST wants to use PECS at school and doesn't do any oral motor work. She says "let's just see what natural communication opportunities arise in ...

Somehow, my 9th grade IEP (special ed) student ended up being placed in an ADVANCED COLLEGE PREP English course!!! He is no dummy, but he cannot read/write like most kids in his age group. He is borderline dyslexic, with a MAJOR visual processing disorder... WTF is the school thinking???? I was told at the begining of the year that he was place in "Freshman English". I kept thinking the ...

Well duh. there is also no TA in his classroom this year and we are still waiting for the computer that was requested on May 12. Today he brought home a test on ...

I had my IEP with my son’s teacher, speech therapist, etc... and they were going to try to incorporate sign language into his learning. I feel like this would be very benifical for him. He already knows a couple of signs like eat, drink, and more. I did see one for I love you and showed him, he picked it up fast. Does anyone have any suggestions on good sign language videos/books to try to teach ...
