I am looking into hydrogen embrittlement testing for some cadmium plated carbon steel Spring Pins and I'm not too sure about some of it. I understand you have to install them in holes or rods of a certain size but are there any other requirements for these holes(such as depth)? Thanks

I work in a plating shop and have the ability to hard chrome plate blades if I want to but I recall reading something about high carbon steel becoming brittle in the chrome plating process. I know that real hard chrome shops (we do decorative plating only) plate at about a thou per hour so parts could be plated for several hours to build up say a hydraulic ram before it gets ...

I've seen a couple of STI frames develope cracks after hard chroming and have read that Hydrogen Embritlement occurs to steel after receiving a hard chrome finish. The plater I talked to said they bake all parts after plating to relieve the hydrogen embrittlemt, but it still seemed like parts failure was a concern after plating. So my question is, does hard chrome finish weaken the gun ...

I do not have experience in chroming, but I know about steelmaking. In making steel, hydrogen embrittlement usually occurs because they get water into the refining ladle and it gets so hot it dissassociates into hydrogen and oxygen. It does not take much (8-10 parts per million) to cause an issue. That said, I do not see how the hydrogen would form (low temps) and how it would be ...

We have been using the process using washing soda available in the laundry soap area of larger grocery stores. , 5 gallon bucket for small parts, 55 gal barrel for the larger pieces, Barrels are free from the big car wash in town. My son lined the bed of a spare pickup on the farm with doubled 6 mil plastic. he welded up a rebar grid and sat it on pieces of foam so as to not punch holes and ...

Just curious? Good luck with crack valves at about 10,000 miles.
