A friend brought a good point. How did the old sailing ships (galleon, man-o-war) get out of the harbor on a windless day, before the age of steam? Those things weren't light. They could get up to 2000t. Did people row them out on oars? Did they anchor outside the harbors and use small boats to ferry men and supplies?
