Dear all, recently, I was in Chile and visited Putre and Lauca NP (3600 to 4600 meters above sea level). I have a camera with LiIon battery, and a toothbrush where I use rechargeable AA batteries (similar to the Sanyo Enelopes). I noticed that the camera kept going strong, but the toothbrush all of a sudden felt old even with batteries that had been freshly charged before going up high; the ...

Hello! Well, this year for Christmas Day, I've decided to attempt my first ever Red Velvet cake - being a born and bred Western Canadian girl, I've never even tried a slice before! Anyways, reading reviews of a bunch of recipes, I've noticed some people have had problems with the cake being dry! Well, living in Calgary, I'm at an altitude of 3440 (!) and the climate is extremely dry, ...

I live at 5200 feet and read a lot of instruction but I haven't seen anything that specifically addresses the fact that playing at altitude is a somewhat different beast than playing below 1500 feet or so. I'm wondering if playing at altitude suits certain strategies better than others. High-altitude balls are supposed to help minimize the difference but people that I have talked to that ...

Hi, Does anyone know of any good high altitude baking sites? My pies turn out ok in Mexico City, but I'm struggling with brownies and cookies. I have tried adjusting the recipe, but just can't seem to get it. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Elizabeth

We have a home at 8200ft altitude. Many of my recipes for baking are not turning out. I would appreciate any recipes you have found successful at higher elevations. TIA CarolO

I am jealous of the whole Colorado thing. With global warming skiing will only exist at high altitude... Whistler's going to prove to be a mistake in 20 years...and almost all east coast skiing places will be dead.

DH and I own a log cabin at 8200' altitude in the Rockies SW of Denver. We are seldom here and I have to learn to cook all over again whenever we are home. Baking--I stick to cookies and just add a tad more flour and a bit less butter... It does sucketh...

Dane, that's a situation not confined to Mexico City or high altitude. It's near universal. Baking is an art based on a science. Precision in measuring is important when making cakes and to a lesser degree, cookies, but bread dough has a wider latitude of tolerance. (I can imagine this thread getting moved to Home Cooking or something like that because it's not Mexico-specific.) Other factors ...

Good luck! I lived at 7500 feet for several years and I never did learn to cook properly there. I had problems with nearly everything, not just baking (which I didn't do much of). Use some creative Google search terms and see what you come up with.

Well i've never actually made red velvet cake before, but i think the best piece of advice i can give is to watch your oven temp and don't overcook it otherwise it will definitely end up being dry! goodluck though! I hope it turns out perfectly for you on Christmas!

Thanks ladies. I keep wanting to find a reason for my PTL so I can prevent it from happening with this baby! My dr said taking progesterone shots starting at 12 weeks should really help. And I'm praying a lot for this sweet baby.

It's an interesting question. Normally the cold can affect the batteries more than altitude. That said I had an old Canon camera - pre digital - and the battery blew up at 1,300 - not high I know but didn't seem to like altitude!
