Thanks for the advice, and i am also relieved to know that i am not alone in having such a hard time working on their car. I had gotten the feeling from all the DIYs that it was easy for them and had gotten discouraged. Also, your only up in Del Mar, is there a local BMW club that meets for track days and the like?

Well first the ebrake should be easy. Take apart the center console and check out the switch. If its not that then maybe the wire got cut somewhere. As far as running like crap, have you done a vacuum check yet? I forget how to check obd1 codes, but you should start with figuring out what the CEL is. Compression check? plugs wires? It could be anything with those archaic Subaru's.
