and I'm SOOOOO excited! not to mention, there were only 3 sheep instructors listed for NY on the northeast herding website... and the one on Long Island is like 5 minutes from me! so *neener neener* to all you people who drive 1.5 hours. If he likes it, I think I'll do weekly classes... so now our set week will be: 1 day agility, 1 day obed, 1 day herding, and 1 day 2+ hours biking...

In the constant search for new and fun things to do with Tara, I would like to see if she has any interest in herding. It looks like the closest place in Virginia is Keepstone Farms in Berryville with Susan Rhoades. I was just wondering if anyone here was familiar with them or if anyone had any other recommendations in my area to try herding? Also, I'm wondering if this is even a good idea. ...

I have not been to Keepstone Farms, but a few of my friends have taken their gsd's out there for testing and I have heard nothing but good things about Susan.

I've been wanting to try herding with my 4 yr old Ruger for quite a while. I got an opportunity to take him to a herding instinct test yesterday. Sorry, no pictures. It was a yucky day weather wise. So, here's some background info first. Ruger had been previously working in obedience, until I messed him up. I was nervous, and I put too much pressure on him. He got his first little title, RN,...

When Mandy and I run like we did today in a large field or out in the back yard she will bark and slightly growl at me. It seems as if she is doing this not when running straight on but when I make a turn...so, it looks to me as if it is a herding instinct. When she does this...should it be corrected? And if so how?

... Roxy has NO herding instinct! She was very quiet before it was her turn. She didn't have any interest in the sheep outside of the ring. She looked at them, air scented a bit, but was more interested in the loud tractor! lol When she went in the ring she was glued to my side, I sent her away and she literally tip toed around the muddy pasture (many people had a good giggle at this it was...

For those in the area, as the title implies (lol), there's a herding instinct test in Lindsay, ON (about 2 hours north from Toronto) on Saturday October 3rd. There will be a lunch as well as a "fungility" course set up for waiting dogs. Cost is $40. All breeds, mixed even are allowed! Age doesn't matter! Roxy's 5 and has never done anything of the sort, it's purely based on instinct, no training ...

They're put on a long line to start. From what I understand your in the ring but the man doing the actual test has the line. They spend a total of 20 minutes in the ring round about and it all depends on the dog whether they're let off the line or not. Ducks are $30, Sheep are $100. Although I have heard of some Rotts killing sheep in the area (I don't know who held the actual test...
