I am thinking of building an ISLAND HEARTH as described in the Pompei Oven Instructions. 1) Can I use clay splits (1 1/4" clay bricks) instead of firebrick splits as described in the Instructions? 2)What happens if I use the whole brick instead of the split brick? 3)Will the ISLAND HEARTH effect the initial heat up time for pizza's? 4)The instructions call for REFRACTORY CONCRETE and ...

I've got a nice surround but I need some kind of hearth for it to stand on. The surround is quite wide so ideally it should be about 60" wide. Marble would be good but would consider something else.

Crush and Acid Inc., an importer, sponsored a dinner last Sunday, the 14th, at Hearth featuring van Volxem’s Saar wines. Roman Niewodniczanski, van Volxem’s owner, arrived straight off a plane from Zurich to chair the evening. I had little experience with his bottlings, and this was an eye-opener. Niewodniczanski, an heir to the Bitburger beer fortune, bought the property in 2000 and has ...

I like the 2nd pic down. I don't think wainscotting would add to your room and I cannot envision toile - feels like it'd be too busy with such a large space? Is there any possible way to get the door to swing out? Is that whole new door(s) & frame? Is your problem with #2 that the walkspace is jumbled? If not, why not stick with #2?

Yes, you can use the Forno Bravo board on top of the 1" vermiculite/concrete layer. That will provide even more insulation than many folks are using (you can use the 2" insulation board without any additional insulation under the oven floor).

TSP is also a great stone/brick cleaner. Others here have used Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner on fireplace bricks with great results. If these don't seem to help clean it, then perhaps your bricks just have this permanent patina or surface look?
