REWARDS, Blend Phonics and daily phonogram review helped increase ds's reading level by 2-3 grades. Where do I go from here? Can I jump in, late, with a Barton or Wilson program or something similar? Or do I just have him read, read, read? He still needs help with decoding, fluency and comprehension. Oh - and the more scripted and repetitious, the better it is for him! Thanks.

No personal experience, but what kind of math does your school use? I think it's important to look at why dc is "so so" at computation (and what grade he is in). Is it memorization? Does he simply make careless mistakes? There may be many different reasons, depending on why dc is so-so.

Help! The idea of going to first grade has been thrown out there, but with three of them (plus two more that are close behind), I feel like I can have them working at something challenging during centers together. Any ideas? I SO appreciate any ideas you have!!

All of this stat crap supporting Belichicks decision is garbage and here's why: Nowhere do these account for the specific situation. First off, they call a time out which gives the defense time to have several adjustments ready in their minds for whatever formation the Pats got in. 2nd they were in an empty set (no running back for you math guys). With Brady being a zero run threat, this was an ...

This is my first year teaching 1st grade. My grade level chair, "Ms. H" is the only other teacher on my team. Her child is also in my class. We were getting along relatively well, but I noticed sometimes she would do or say mean things to me ( ie: i straigtening up papers in my room and she rolls her eyes and goes, "you're getting on my nerves! you're taking too long to pick those up! i ...

It's a really simple math problem on whether or not to go for it in that situation. All you need is to assign probabilities to the following: Chance of getting a first down on 4th and 2 Chance of Colts scoring a TD from 30 yards out with 1 TO left. Chance of Colts scoring a TD from ~70 yards out with 1 TO left. Chance of Pats coming back and scoring when the Colts score (should be ...

A question for those who have used Mosdos: Dd9/Gr4 is new to literature study. In reading level, she could slot into the second level of Mosdos (Coral - Gr 5) with no problem. However, I am concerned that she would then be missing a foundational knowledge that will be assumed. Does the second level of Mosdos review the concepts covered in the first level (Ruby)? I feel that we are not ...

I just read this interesting article in the New York Post about a young man who graduated high school with a second grade reading level. It is heartbreaking, because his stepfather is now trying to obtain specialized tutoring for the young man, even though he has already graduated. here is the article... A diploma I can't read

What I want to know is how his mother and stepfather allowed this to happen. It's not just the school's fault. What happened to him is an example of why I support testing. Some people complain that testing means that teachers teach to the test. At least then there is some accountability. IF the students just know what's on the test, that's better than knowing nothing at all. Of course, if the ...

This year he is simply using Megawords and having him read more. I think it's been helpful for him to read along *some* with audio books that are on a 6th-7th grade reading level. He also daily reads along with bible on audio and SOTW. He is *really* enjoying reading this year as long as I don't force him to read for long sessions at a time *and* let him have some say-so in book choices ...

Is it disingenuous of me to suggest that leaving significant grammar work until AS/ A2 level is too late? Too many potentially good linguists are losing out because they have been fobbed off for too long with phrase-book MFL, which is sufficient for getting the C grade or above at GCSE but hopeless for developing a creative competence.
