Hi guys. I have a question on a basic home network with a gigabit switch - I haven't implemented anything yet, this is just a question I have in mind. I'm currently using a basic Netgear wireless ADSL modem/router in my lounge room - this connects my Xbox and lounge room laptop by wire, and Wii wirelessly. These devices are on the usual 10/100 connection as controlled by the Netgear modem/...

Im wondering what I need to do to set up gigabit speeds in my network. Ill have a gigabit Ethernet capable PC that I would like to be able to use but as far as getting there I have no idea how. I get my internet connection through Optimum(cable) which I will be upgrading to around a 75 to 100 mbps speed, the most they offer. So I figure for a gigabit speed I need a gigabit supporting modem, ...

Backing up /home compressing with pbzip2 (parallel bz2 using pthreads). Pipeview (pv) sits between the pipes and measures the data flowing between tar and netcat on each end (the bottom screen window is ssh). Compressing to bz2 at around 30 MB/s is pretty ridiculous considering when testing the normal single-threaded bzip I got 9MB/s, and Gzip/deflate was 20MB/s. With no compression...

I have two computers connected in LAN. Our old router is very flakey and currently we are borrowing one to use as a replacement. I am looking at a new Wireless N router with Gigabit LAN. Do I need special cabling to use the Gigabit LAN? Will it only work on the computer to computer transfers?

if you don't need advanced features of expensive gigabit lan cards (such as support for vlan) then just go for any brand. They are all pretty much generic. Most uses realtek chipset anyway.
