A genetic variation which evolved to protect people of African descent against malaria has now been shown to increase their susceptibility to HIV infection by up to 40 percent, according to new research. Conversely, the same variation also appears to prolong survival of those infected with HIV by approximately two years. More...

Recall that some traits, such as skin color, appear to be controlled by several genes. This creates a continuum of variation. If this polygenic explanation for the inheritance of human skin pigmentation is correct, how do the skin colors of the following 4 individuals compare? Which of the couples could have children with the widest range of skin colors? Couple 1: aaBbCC...

In California, a lack of genetic variation in the Argentine ant has allowed the species to spread widely; due to their being so genetically similar to one another, the ants consider all their fellows to be a close relative and thus do not engage in the kind of fierce intercolony struggles that limits the spread of this species in its native Argentina. SPOILER: D A. due to their ...

...and that branch connected it to a major facial nerve that isn't supposed to have any connection to teeth. So, the Dentist shot my mouth so full of novocaine that my entire head was numb... except for that single tooth. When I could still feel that, he took a second x-ray and showed me how the nerve branched and attached to a nerve it wasn't supposed to be attached to. It attached to a ...

Sorry, I meant genetic variation or change within one organsim... ie. mutation... thought that was clear. Right, my point earlier, he didn't even know about genes... he couldn't have believed in random mutation. dAK

genetic variation is shown to be a non random process Darwin was aware that most variation is non-random. Most variation (for the last billion years) is the result of sexual recombination of genes. Although Darwin didn't know about genes, he did realize that sexual reproduction caused a variation that was a new combination of characteristics which had been successful in the past. ...

He just put "Red Tail Boa." He usually doesn't sell any sort of morph , so I was surprised. Morph A morph is a color or pattern variation that is proven to be genetic. Common morphs include albino, anerythristic, gentically striped, Hypomelanistic, and many others. Morphs also include combinations of simple traits such as "...

Is this title hilarious? I didn't come up with it. The National Review did. Found this article on NationalReviewOnline, and it's eyebrow-raising ‒ not just for its erroneous claim that nature "won" the nature vs. nurture debate, or its support of Arthur Jensen's theory that blacks are genetically inferior to whites, or its citing (by blog screenname) an unabashed sexist as a credible ...

They said images of cocaine addicts' brains reveal abnormalities in the cerebral cortex -- the brain's outer surface -- and ...

This is part of an article published today in the Daily Telegraph, one of the largest (and certainly most respectable) daily newspapers in the UK. As a firm believer in evolution and Darwinism, I find it an extremely interesting read - and whilst the topic of religion can't be avoided in a subject like this, I'd be interested in hearing what others of you think without it degenerating to the ...
