Reading the manpage for fsck, it cautions against doing a filecheck on a partition that is already mounted. Or that you shouldn't attempt it unless you really know your stuff. Or that if you did attempt fsck on a read-only filesystem, it could be unpredictable. Yet I'm sure the rootfs get checked sometimes during system initialization. So there obviously is a safe way to do it, I'm just not ...

The normal fsck check before booting has hung up on two occasions in the last couple of days. Probably the first fsck checks since a fresh install. My system: dual boot Dell Dimension 8300 first hard drive - sda - Windows XP second hard drive - sdb - Ubuntu 9.10, separate /home partition The second hard drive was a new larger drive to replace the original smaller drive. I did a ...

I am running FC-7 which I realize is an older distro. But my question would apply to any distro. I ran fsck on my mounted file system (I know, I shouldn't have). Now it won't boot. I get a kernel panic message. I booted to a Knoppix Live Cd. The desktop icon shows /dev/sda2 mounted at /media/sda2. When I perform ls -l on /media/sda2 it shows total 0. When I perform dumpe2fs /...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870984/ Plot synopsis: 1hr 20min of fsck; 20 min of holy mother of fscking fsck. Around Halloween it made a round at the fancypants artsy theaters, but it's easily available via torrent right now (DVD quality). It won an anti-award at Cannes for its misogynistic portrayal of women. And it left me physically affected. It's not really a scary movie...

Hi, I have been having trouble booting up my imac G5 recently and it has now got so bad that unless you perform fsck -fy first it will not start at all. Even then it may take a couple of tries. I always get the pcscd.pub error message even though it says the HD is fine. I know there are other threads of a similar nature but not exactly the same as mine. Your help would be ...

Thanks for the quick help. I let the FC12 recovery console mount the drive, then did umount /mnt/sysimage -l to force unmount, then ran df -T to confirm it was no longer mounted, followed by fsck -y /dev/mapper/vg_mysys-lv_home and that allowed me in!
