They help to give some idea of the poster's personality, as well as identify someone quickly. I hit 80 a few weeks ago, but my avatar/level still hasn't changed on the forums. It may not seem to be such a big problem but it's really bugging me and is annoying when Im asking questions, saying Im 80. every moving .gif is made from a short sequence of movie... so unless you are godly at photoshop, or have a piece of movie about your avatar, you can't do it
