what is the best optimum focal length to set on I.S? do you need to change the I.S focal length depending on your shot, such as from wide angle to a telephoto shot? eg. if you're taking shots at 300mm using a telephoto lens, you would set this at 300mm or 600mm equivalent? (I'm guessing 600mm, since the focal length I.S can be set from 8mm - 1000mm) what about a wide angle ...

Hard to believe this topic hasn't been broached before (forgive me if i missed it). Mine's 28mm on a 35mm slr. It's wide enough to provide a hint of drama to the proportions of the image without being so wide as to be distracting. By now it just seems natural for me to shoot at that length and it has become the way I see the world. It would be nice to hear from folks who use...

Today, with heavy low-lying clouds and the start of a drizzle, I decided to go out any way. Since it was so dark, when I took the picture of this heron I was challenged to keep the camera steady, and get good results with such a long focal length and low shutter speed. I braced myself or tried other techniques so I could capture good quality pictures in miserable conditions. I'm so glad to ...

I have never used a tilt shift lens, but I have been researching them. I understand what they are used for, and how to use them, but I am a little fuzzy on the best application of the different focal lengths. Canon currently makes TS-E in 17, 24, 45, 90 mm focal lengths. Is it basically the same reason you use different focal lengths in normal lenses? After reading countless articles, ...

At which focal length and aperture does the 55-200 VR present the least chromatic aberration? I'm playing with a series of close-up lenses ("filters") and I'd like to minimize it as much as possible
Hi, I'm looking for a new lens to compliment my 7D. I currently have a 18-135 IS, and a 200 2.8L. I ran an exposure plot on my existing collection of around 2000 images I've shot so far with the 7D. I have spikes at 18mm(200+ images) and 135mm(500+images) and from 19-134 the shots taken average out around 20 images for every 10 mm in focal length that gets added. I have smaller spikes (30-40 ...

I have had the new 70-200 vrii for a week and can say its the best built and performing glass I have. I think I like it better than my 24-70... or maybe its just newer. It really is great. I am however curious as to what is meant by several reviews I've read charging that it is really a 65 - 150 based on focus point. Can one of you storied physicists explain the charge? I want ...

All this hubbub over "loss of focal length" got me thinking about the actual matter, which is maximum reproduction ratio (magnification). Consider Nikon's line of 200mm lenses and their reproduction ratios: Lens 200/2 Ai-S-- 1:9.5 200/2 AFS VR-- 1:8.1 200/4 Ai-S--- 1: 7.4 200/4 D Micro-- 1:1 So, here are four different "200mm" lenses, each with a different magnification ratio at its closest ...

If I am wrong please correct me. I see lot of people like to multiple the focal length by 1.5 while talking about the DX format, and most even take that as a advantage when comparing to FX format. From what I understand however, you don't really get 1.5 times of zoom increased; what you getting is 1.5 times of image magnification. Take a 200mm prime lens for example, if you mount it on both DX ...

Can someone explain how the lens' local length is measured. I read somewhere it is from the center of the lens, when it is focused on infinity, to the flim or sensor plane. What is the center of the lens? How do you set the camera on infinity since it seems to be dependent on f/stop--higher f/stops would yield focus to infinity "quicker". Thanks for reading. Kkamin

i do not have a particular fav focal length or lens or camera. i shoot with whatever i lay my hands on. if it is my iphone 3gs, so be it. Otherwise, i choose my equipment incl. focal length depending on the subject. my photo-stream bears witness!

It's too hard to understand that the lens moves the eye point while focussing. This changes the perspective, which is easily misinterpreted as focal length change.

Example - I don't sell one of my best lenses to buy another version - UNTIL I have first thoroughly tested the new updated copy and know that it fully meets my needs. IF it doesn't - I don't buy it. Simple... KEV

Its more like 4-5 USD at least here in the states and even cheaper if you prefer B&W or do your own development. Besides, there really isn't that much of a learning curve as that big ground glass means what you see is what you get. You're correct in that you probably wouldn't want to learn basic photography with it... but you wouldn't want to learn with a TS-E lens either....

I would leave sharpening at default setting. The close focus issue is something to be aware of, not really a problem unless you were trying to shoot macro with it. With RAW processing, you can change it later anyway.

Thanks guys for the input. I suppose I never thought of it that way, that is, buy for now and not the future. Maybe I'll give the 17-55 IS a bit more thought, and if and when I ever go full frame, I'll sell it to fund an EF lens. I have been actively looking for a 10-22! The few I've found have all sold before I was able to make a deal though. Thanks! Rick
