Hi, I'm travelling to Prague from the UK in a week. I've just read in a guide that a EHIC is required. I know it is advisable to have one, but do I actually need one in order to travel there? I've applied for one but it may not come in time. Please put my mind at rest!

Hi all, Not posted much but I thought I would bring this to your attention! I was looking to renew our E111 /EHIC cards and googled for a link to renew as the original www, address has been changed. Many links popped up and the first wanted to charge £9.99 ?!? Charging- I thought is wrong as this is free so, to renew your E111 remember use google with care. PS I don't ned to do ours yet as...

Quote: The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost or sometimes free of charge. If anyone is holidaying in Europe over the winter you may want to sign up. Most European countries offer free emergency medical care should you be ...

Hi, Myself and my boyfriend are going to work a ski season in France as chalet hosts in December for 5 months. Our employer provides us with Carte Neige insurance which basically gets us off the mountain if we have an accident. We both have EHIC cards. Will we also need to get a more comprehensive travel insurance for the 5 months? Any tips or advice on the best route to go down will be much ...

Resident in France, some 18 months, with Carte Vitale and some top up health insurance, just wishing to check if there any issues on returns to UK (for family visits, wedding etc) regarding NHS health care. We both have an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), valid to Jan 2011. Is that all we might need? Reason asking is expat friends have been in confusion as to their own cover on return ...

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. I just wanted to let other forum members know what this hospital is like. WirralScouse, Alcudia hospital is no more!. Seriosly, it's gone. It's being re-converted into a third age residence... (the top floor was already that). Plus, it was a private hospital. My parents always had private medical insurance until my Mum wasn't ...

The thing with the EHIC card as said before it only covers you for a nhs hospital, but in an emergency you need to go to the nearest and best hospital which may be a private hospital. In a life or death situation where would you choose your loved one to be?

Just to enlarge on what Bookworm says, the state run hospitals in Spain are of a high standard, whilst many of the private clinics there are not - as Wino has discovered (I can guess which clinic). Beware recommendations from tour operator's reps, and even some assistance companies. With the EHIC, it is possible for bills to be settled retrospectively, but it can be a lot of hassle and not ...

So, I have been a resident in the UK for 7 months, arriving in May 2009. My DH is an American who arrived as a resident in March 2009. We acquired a basic HSBC UK account in December 2008 (by having a HSBC US account relationship). We then upgraded to having travel insurance through HSBC Plus account/Aviva around August 2009 before a trip within the EU. That was fine. We had our EHIC cards as ...
