So, I've got a new Drobo. Now, I want to learn how to use it in emergencies. I've created three partitions. The first one I use for Time Machine backups. The second one is bootable and I use CarbonCopy to duplicate the mac main drive. I intend to use this partition to startup in case of the main drive fails. The third I use to store data. Suppose my mac main drive fails. How can I startup the ...

I'm not super happy with the performance of the Drobo (but this may be improved with more recent firmware/software) and find myself constantly wondering whether it has shut down/restarted safely (as the Dashboard software refuses to install - TOTAL pain in the arse.) Should the device shut down too abruptly, I'm worried the controller will hose my data. The only thing it does do is prevent ...

I am an experienced system builder but not sure if I should build a WHS or FreeNAS system or just go with the Droboshare option. Build my own seems cheaper and more flexible, but the Drobo seems simpler. Thoughts?

If you have an old computer and some drives use FreeNAS. Pentium 4 will work fine or this: How-to: Mini DIY Project: 2TB NAS Box for $360 (Update 3) http://boredsysadm.blogspot.com/20 [...] x-for.html

If you just need storage space, i don't see a problem with the drobo. It's not known for its speed, but thats not what you're after anyway. I would use your remaining internal slot for a clone of your boot drive with superduper (in addition to time machine), or scratch disk, etc. You should partition your main drive, (or whatever drive is the fastest) into like a boot drive ...

There were a few oddities that I had to deal with on the LaCie model I had, but nothing as dramatic...

Hello, It's very important to properly initialize a drive if you want to be able to use it as a startup drive. Most drives come set up for Windows, and while they'll generally work with the Mac, they won't work properly as startup drives. A "partition scheme" is the low-level on-drive stricture that is used by the OS to find the "volumes" (the "drives" that appear in Finder—a physical disk ...
