I've been working as a birth doula for 2.5 years and have attended 20 births. I find the work extremely meaningful and rewarding. I have two sons, ages 4 and 8, and usually my mom can watch the younger one, or my dh will take off work (I try not to do this often since he's the primary breadwinner here) -- childcare is still a bit of a hassle though it's easier as they get older. ...

I've been on benefits for awhile now and I'm currently SAHM. I get married in just over 18 months and need to be working when I do because I will lose my money and we can't afford to live just on his. I've decided to train as a Doula which I start in February and hope to have completed my training births before I get married. I know what a Doula does and all that side of it but I don't ...

I meet with my Doula tomorrow, who is also my coach for Hypnobabies!!! I am very excited and she is going to work something out with the Hypnobaby people so that my husband can do distance education and then give him a crash course in labor a few days before the baby is born. She comes highly recommended by my CNM and I am stoked that she does aromatherapy in the hospital room. Is ...

Hi there! I'm a Doula in Training with Childbirth International and am located on the Northside of Brisbane. Hi all, I haven't been posting much, but I have been reading all of your posts and birth stories, witch inspired me to try for VBAC. I am going to hire a doula, but I will interview several before I decide. Can you help me with the questions I need ask them at the interview? I have some in mind, but don't want to miss anything important. Thanks

Hi all, I'm a doula in Ottawa - recently returned to school to do a Master's in Social Work and have been writing lots about social support and birth. I'm writing a paper right now on the "doula movement" and its connection with both the feminist movement and the "pro life" movement. In the interests of full disclosure I do consider myself a "pro choice doula" but this paper is ...

Agreed. I've met some women who seem to think being a doula is a great job (because of the work and the income) but I don't think they realize how inconsistent it is and how you have to find clients in the first place... I plan on doing a lot of pro-bono births. But just from talking to many other doulas, it is NOT work that you can rely on for a living.

I know it's a little soon to be thinking about giving birth again, but Leyla's birth didn't go how I wanted because the midwife kept talking me out of everything I wanted and convincing me to do things I didn't want! I've read online that a doula can help you get the birth you want and will liaise with the medical staff for you, so I think I would like to hire one for our next baby. Does ...

Hi there, I'm expecting my second baby in April next year. Last time I didn't cope with the pain at all (had gas, morphine and eventaully epidural). This time I am trying for a drug free birth and want to be better prepared, and better supported. So I'm considering hiring a Doula. Has anyone used a Doula? How did you find the experience? Is there anyone you could recommend to ...

My delivery with my DS was quick, very quick. I went to the hospital at 1 am, I was only dilated to 3 and at 4:34 am my DS was here. My mom was not there yet bc the nurse told me it would pointless to have her there and I needed my rest. I did not have a nurse tell me what was going to happen next. The last thing a nurse said to me was, do you want something to help you sleep? I am glad I ...

Are there any mamas out here with nursing babies who also handle being a doula? I am very interested in being a doula, but I'm thinking it probably wouldn't work with a young nursling. This is just a thought - one that I've been thinking for about two months. I'm not looking to take any steps in the near future. DH goes into work at a church at 100 and works till 5:30, flexible work...

How incredibly frustrating it must have been for that woman :o( I was very recently a Doula for a woman who had a vba3c - it was one of the most relaxing births I had been present at - a waterbirth at her home, no less. Makes me feel privileged to live in New Zealand!

I can't find our old post so I started a new one. My big news is that DH is on board for a home birth! We had an appointment with our midwives this week and a meeting with our doula. It's feeling pretty real now. I'm hesitant about spending $275 on renting a birthing pool. What is everybody else planning to do?

Hi all my name is Sam for those who didn't see my intro. I am actually not a teen mom(though I am 19), but I work as a birth doula and a childbirth instructor and wanted to get some insight on how you as young moms feel you are treated so I can better serve my younger clients. Anyways I am in the process writing my curriculum for the childbirth series I will be teaching and wanted some ...

I am looking for some doulas who have worked in a hospital based program in Missouri with Bernie Hinton. She is the new director of Women's Services at my local hospital here in GA and she told me she ran a hospital doula program in the past. I am connecting with her for the first time this week and just thought I would check here to see if anyone could help me. Thanks!

Because thats what I did all weekend. 2 situations So I was visiting family for thanksgiving, and my very opinionated aunt found out that I'm a doula. Immidiatly she was telling me how stupid the very IDEA of a doula is,and what a waste of money they are. ("youre not REALLY thinking about becoming one of them are you??") ->well once I told her,yes I already AM one,I tried to re-make over her ...
