DD is 5 y/o - started drop off playdates with DCs in our building at 2.5 (knew the families/nannies really well - it was more like swapping childcare than actual playdate); with preschool or dance school classmates at 4 (I would go with her the first time, after that it was dropoff); almost all K playdates are dropoff.
