I used DBAN to securely wipe an 80GB hard drive in an IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop. Now, I cannot initialize the drive either on the laptop or on another machine in a USB HD Enclosure. I want to use dban to wippe out hard drive, I downloaded it, but cannot open the files. Do you download it and save to computer, or will it download directly to cd . Do you need a program to open it?

I dont want to use disk utility i want to try to use DBAN i burned a disc both types power pc and intel the power pc one didnt work at all and the intel one booted up and then after you type in autonuke or any other command it starts to work and then it says it failed from non fatal errors. I was a bit weary of recovering using my Linux partition...but I found a neat Windows app (ZAR) that was able to identify the previous file structure and restore everything including directories and file names. So it's as good as new, now.

Another vote for dban from me. 1 pass is enough, 3 if you are feeling really paranoid. An alternative would be to do a clean install of windows and then use CCleaner or Eraser to securely wipe the unused areas of the disk.

Bei sensiblen Daten entscheiden sich Notebookbesitzer recht oft dafür, die alte Platte zu behalten. Das wäre also keine ungewöhnliche Maßnahme. Aber auch DBAN wäre eine gute und sichere Lösung.
