I am a huge fan of running -- normally do 5-7 miles three or four times a week. However, the air quality has been awful in Utah lately so running outside is not advised or enjoyable. I've been going to the gym and doing the Stairmaster, Elliptical, and ArcBuilder instead -- if I do this for a couple weeks, am I sabotaging any base I've built up with my...

snowshoeing! Instead of hitting they gym and running on the dreadmill or getting on the road-to-nowhere stationary bike get out and try the one perfect cross training exercise for running, snowshoeing. Not only is it a great workout, it's a wonderful way to get out in the fresh winter air. Try This: Snow Play Photo by Eric Willis By Lisa Densmore...

I thought this would be good for any of our fellow injured forumites who can't run at the moment, so whatever mileage you are covering whether it be cycling, cross trainer or swimming etc post it here. Hopefully for those injured this will give a bit of motivation to those who can't get out and run at the moment, but can still do exercise. I hope roadrunnerrob doesn't mind but I will ...

I have found this device called the "gravity rider" It trains you for standing and whoops. They are on craigslist for anywhere from $15 on up. Voight used to make them. It is basically doing low impact squats in an aerobic format. I do ...

I am an avid runner looking for good cross training options. My goal is to increase core strength and strengthen muscles that don't get used running. By doing this I also hope to minimize my chance of injury due to muscle imbalances. Would yoga help me achieve this goal? How does yoga compare to weight training using light weight and lots of reps in strengthening and toning muscles? I'm a ...

I feel that this is a question that could be answered for martial artists of all levels, especially for the noobs: Should you cross-train into multiple different styles (such as BJJ, San Shou, ect) when you have a primary martial arts style (such as Tae Kwon Do, Ninjutsu, Muay Thai, ect)? If so, how, when, and why? What makes cross-training useful? I personally assume (from...

Best Cross Training Shoes? I went to Dick's yesterday to find a new pair of Crosstrainers and it was a total waste of time. They had no selection and I couldn't find anything. I'm looking to spend about $80-120 for them. What do you like? I need something with good lateral support for kickboxing, cardio, weight ...

Well I wouldn't know how devastating Steven Seagal is in real life but 1) Against a common thug: This is what I am hoping to answer, and I am tending towards yes with more realistic training. 2) Against a trained fighter: No, but Aikido wasn't intended as such and I don't see it as a failing. In Aikido we learn to train without resistance but we must train for a common...

I trained for a half marathon last fall and needed to rest an injury just before the race. My coach assured me that I wouldn't "lose my training" in the week and half that I didn't run. He said that you don't lose 4 months of training in that short a time - so if you've been running for a long time, you won't lose it that quickly. As the previous ...
