I've been through various battles with my astonishingly incompetent council's benefit office. My benefit's recently gone down quite a bit, I've requested an explanation of exactly how they came by the figure, but they've yet to reply. It's easy enough to determine, for example, income tax liability or incapacity benefit entitlement, but I've yet to find a clear set of rules for calculating ...

Wondered if anyone could awnser my question? My ex has agreed to pay me a set amount of child maintenance each month directly to my bank account which we have agreed privately between ourselves. Does child maintenance affect the amount of housing benefit or council tax benefit I receive? I am about to claim for the 1st time and move into rented accomodation. Such a worry knowing if I will be ...

Hi all, just wondering if anybody can help me. As we are really struggling to make ends meet at the moment I have been through everything cutting costs as far as I can and the only thing left is council tax. Every 'can you claim' thing I fill out tells me I should either be paying no council tax or reduced council tax. Getting rather excited I checked it out on the council's website and the...

Morning, I have had my application for housing and council tax benefit confirmed from the council offices. We were never eligible for any help but since the rules about not counting child benefit in the benefit calculations changed on Nov 2nd we found that we could now access the help. My worry was that if we then got this help it would push us over the £99 surplus resulting in an IPA, ...

My parents are currently going through a really messy divorce . We all still live together until they sort out finances etc. My dad contributes nothing towards bills etc and recently has all of this extra money from nowhere. I dropped out of college last summer and have been desperately looking for a job since (i can only do certain work due to a dodge ankle). Anyway, my flat mate went into the council tax office to register as a student. At the same time the lady told him that she ...

I am trying to apply for council tax benefit. I live with my mum who is a pensioner and on a low income. we have been on the entitledto and local council website and think that we would be entitled to a reduction in our council tax. Like has been already said entitled to is a VERY rough guide. I find that a lot of the time it isn;t very accurate at all. With regard to the HB/CTB the loacl LA's calculator will be the more accurate of the two. If your unsure call up the HB dept and ask them to do a quick calc with you.

Hi Trudy B Just a wee note, you could try getting hold of a copy of the Welfare Benefits and Tax Credits Handbook! It is from CPAG (Child Poverty Action Group), it should be in the local reference library and it has a telephone number in it where you can order a copy. Benefit claimants get it at a reduced rate of approx £8-9.00? It has lots of usueful information, especially on earnings ...
