I have a French rail pass. I have made the reservations for the TGV trains that I will be using. However, for 3 other days I will be using Ter or Corail trains. Do I need the reservations for those trains. If so can I make those at train station at Paris airport? Where exactly I need to go to get these done and how much will be the cost of reservation? All the information and suggestions ...

Going to be in Paris for a week beginning 1 Oct. We are going to Caen via Corail but I would like to just get on a TGV and take a ride for the experience. I really dont care where it goes, I'd just like to ride it to a stop, and ride back to Paris. I am staying near Gare Montparnasse. Any suggestions?

Some old photos of mine (back from 2005) ... the record breaking consisted of 2x CP5600 electric locomotives and 13x corail coaches. They achieved something like 237km/h with 1 locomotive pulling (the other just went for the ride to assist on braking and provide the role of 14th). They achieved some confortable 237km/h in those runs ... not the actual record in portugal (...

As you say a pass really only makes sense if you are going to use regional trains and also Corail Intercities trains which do not require reservations. A lot of these are on cross country routes such as Bordeaux to Nantes or Lyon to Strasbourg . Effectively this means that to make the best value of a rail pass in France now means quite a bit of advance planning - its not like 30 ...

Most trains on this route are regional Ter trains for which you do not need a reservation. For the few TGV or Corail InterCity trains you would need a reservation but you would probably have no problem on most trains buying your ticket at the last minute even for these unless you are travelling at a very busy period. The TGV (and possibly the Corail) trains will be more expensive than ...

Yeah, but the train to Caen isn't a "good train" by French standards. Just an old Corail from Saint Lazare, no?

Just a passing thought - most travellers asking about short train connections at CDG are intending to book a TGV advance fare and save a lot of money. As far as I can see, the trains to Caen are normal Corail, so you don't need a seat reservation, and the difference between the high-risk Prem and the normal walk-up fare is about 15€ - I know it's all relative, and that money could be ...
