For lack of a better forum, question about adding compost to my planting beds in the spring.... Do I just add a layer of composted manure on top of the entire planting bed, or do I have to be sure to add the compost AROUND all the dormant and unseen perennials? I realize this probably sounds silly, but I'm sick of mulch and would rather add the compost to all my beds this year, and want to make...

Sorry guys, been composting for years. The dirt is much blacker and richer than the soil that is not composted. Yet many would have me believe that composting releases all of the CO2 originally gathered by the plants back into the air. I can understand burning, but composting? I wait for the enlightened ones to educate me!!!!

It helps to know what elements predominate the biomass and by what ratio. Biomass is mostly made of cellulose built out of sugar molecules CH20. Ignoring the trace element nutrients, 30 lbs of this sugar is made of 12 lbs of carbon + 2 lbs of hydrogen + 16 lbs of oxygen + stored solar energy. (Atoms of C, H & O have almost relative masses of 12, 1 & 16). Still ignoring the trace elements, if you...

"Potting Soil", in the best sense, is never made with actual soil. "Potting Soil" is technically called "potting mix" in the commercial plant production world. "Soil" is what you find in your back yard and on the prairie and on good farms. It is mineral component, organic component and living component (the latter two often combined and stated as "bio-organic"). I'm sorry if my ...

In response to Soilguy's very data-rich, thoughtful post [12/10]: I defer to the knowledge you've gained in your 60+ years of comp/OG and agree that "ecperience counts". Which is the point of the caution expressed by some on this thread. Many of us are not at year 60 or year 30 in our experience/skill. More like at year 1 or so. As you say "experience counts" and I would guess that in the ...

Elizabeth It should be fine, make sure anything that you add is well composted. Only after I harvest, I add new ingredients like black cow manure or plain potting soil. If you think you need fertilizer, use a slow release fertilizer. I use 13-13-13 Nutracote is also sold as Dynamite in HD. I use this in my tomatoes for containers. Try to rotate the crops in your bed, for example ...

Surely you don't believe that a human's digestive system works the same as a cows do you? No, not in all ways, but when it comes to bacteria the human body will react the same as most mammals except of course, the whale I know for a fact that at one time, mammal particles were in the feed, in this country. They may not do it now, but they used to. You are correct. I believe this...

It it was ALIVE, and is now DEAD (or harvested/excreted) it CAN be composted. Period. How depends on the method being used. Hot aerobic, cold aerobic, or anaerobic. If aerobic, also depends on how often the material is turned/screened (re-aerated) and percentage of water and how well the pile is insulated. Bones and shells take longer than plant tissue and flesh. Fiberous material ...

Oh, my... Kimmsr - you're half right on this one, but still perpetuating old myths, eh? When is the last time you read a technical paper published after 1980, on probablilty of pathogens in feline feces? Good girl, barb - for feeling guilty about helping to fill up another landfill. DON'T just throw it in the trash. sylviatexas, you have a good head on your shoulders IMO. I have two ...
