I've got a Compaq Portable 386 which used to work well but has been in storage for several years. On switching it on today it counts the memory ok but stops with error code "162-System options not set - run setup. Insert Diagnostic diskette". Has anyone got a copy of this on a 5.25in floppy I could have please? I will of course pay any reasonable cost. I haven't got a ...

I recently got one of these, and I can't seem to get it to boot correctly. It says there is a keyboard error, which is weird, because the keyboard is perfectly fine. Secondly, it says it needs a diagnostics disk. I insert an IBM PC diagnostics disk, and it says "Non-system or disk read error". Oh, and it does have a harddrive built into it, is there anyway I can get it to boot from it?

I picked up a Portable III at a flea market today, which seems to have a power supply problem. I've been trying to get the supply out to have a closer look, but I haven't the slightest idea how. I removed the back cover, the main board, monitor board, and the drives. How does the power supply come out?

Just a few weeks ago someone posted on here about Portable III hard drive model numbers. So I opened mine up and checked (even though the OP never posted again...). Anyway, I don't recall it being that difficult to access the drives. Not sure about the PSU though... http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcfo...ad.php?t=17 501 Loosen some screws and most of the internals pull out of the cage ...

I have a Compaq Portable II (286, 640RAM, 10 meg hard drive, 5 1/4 floppy) which I'd like to use to read what few BBS are left online, in an attempt to see just how what we know as "the internet" was for the generations before mine. And no, telnet on a new computer won't do: I want to immerse myself in this as much as possible, which somehow I find hard to do when I'm running a quad-core with ...

I'd like to replace the CMOS battery on my Compaq Portable III 386. OK, here's the description:I think it is located near the top of the board, and ISN'T soldered in. It has a total of 4 pins, or "legs," and is inscribed: Lithium Battery-1.5AH-3.4V-Compaq Part#107157-001-Eagle Picher Ind (manufacturer?)-It appears to have two separate cells, plus the other electronic components that are located...

Hi: I'm doing some research for the Computer History Museum and would very much like to know as much information about the Conner HDDs shipped in the Compaq Portable III. A list drives Compaq claims to have shipped is at: http://oldcomputers.net/compaqiii.pdf As a minimum I'd like to know the Conner Model Number which might be a CP340, CP341 or CP342 or some such number and if you ...

I just picked up a Compaq Portable that appears to have a dead keyboard. I can just switch the keycaps and such so, I don't care how ugly it is. Prefer no broken keys but, I can deal with it if that is all there is. Let me know.

Just got one of these, superficially not in great condition - the keyboard cable insulation is disintegrating for a start. But the PSU works and the system tries to boot. Opened it up and it's spotless inside. Has the orange plasma screen. Also has a boot problem I am looking into. But there is another problem - the plasma screen has two horizontal lines [ie. orange lines] running across it ...
