( Has anyone here ever been approved by OHIP with a high BMI but no comorbidities? OHIP has sent my doctor forms for additional info twice but I still haven't heard anything. ,)

( Ok, here's my story, and I am apologizing ahead of time if it gets a little long... A few months ago, when I finally decided to start actively pursuing WLS, I first looked at my insurance policy to see about comorbidities that they consider. This is what my policy states: BMI of 40 or greater, or BMI of 35 or greater with co-morbid conditions including, but not limited to, life ...

( I keep reading about how people don't take their diabetes or high blood pressure medications ever again . . .right after surgery. You don't have to lose some weight first? My hypertension could go away that fast? ,)

About a year ago I went through the process and was denied because my comorbidities weren't severe enough. So I tried diet, excercise and to at least maintain. However I've gained about 15 pounds which puts me at the low end of being 200% over. Lack of energy, lack of self esteem, joint pain and GERD has of course gotten worse with the weight gain. I go in one week from today to reweigh ...

I have been considering LAP-BAND® surgery for almost 3 years now. I attended a seminar about 2 years ago and did not proceed b/c I had a BMI of 36 and no comorbidities. At the time I was not willing to pay for the surgery myself and have tried several attempts at loosing weight but always end up back where I started. I have decided it is now something I am willing to pay for myself. I have ...

Hi. I'm a poster from other forums with multiple comorbidities. Fibro on top of osteoarthritis, post-polio, and more. I've been trying Neurontin (gabapentin) 100 mg at bedtime. It was prescribed 3xday, but I have learned from experience to start slowly. It's great for sleep, but I suspect it will make me sleepy the entire day if I take it in daytime. The problem is when I wake up in...

( Which insurance company? Is your plan self-funded or fully funded \(ask your HR dept.\)? What state? What are your comorbidities? There is NO support for limiting the DS to a BMI > 60. There isn't any good reason for limiting it to ANY particular BMI if you qualify for WLS at all, but there are TONS of papers, including this one hot off the presses, supporting the DS over the RNY ...

( Couple of questions for you \(sleep study related but also, insurance related\): Did you know \(or did you have a pretty good idea\) that you had sleep apnea before you went for the sleep study? I don't think I have it, but from what I'm seeing in WLS patients, it seems like we ALL have some form of it and just don't attribute feeling like crap, to that. I really don't want to go down...

There is no advantage to the patient unless you have some very serious comorbidities and issues. It all speaks to surgeon skill and what he/she is capable of doing. Gagner wrote a paper on this and some surgeons were quick to jump on the bandwagon. I'm not sure why but the surgery is much easier and they get paid for 2 surgeries..... Rabkin, Baltasar, Buchwald, have all done ...

( Hey Steve I don't know her screen name, but tell her to friend me if she'd like to talk. My BMI was around 42 and I didn't have any diagnosed comorbidities either. For me, having the surgery now was about prevention. I think the ease of my recovery had quite a bit to do with my lack of significant health problems and my \(relative\) youth. My cholesterol was 264, but that was the ...

Sorry for the delay in response. Medhelp does not notify me when there are additions to threads. There are several trials undergoing looking at adjuvant radiation with or without hormones: http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00023829 It is important that related comorbidities of surgery are addressed prior to a radiation course. As radiation would only serve to ...

I think that there are very few cases where pulse oximetry is needed at home, on a nightly basis. If you have comorbidities that would benefit from knowing the nightly saturation levels, then you should certainly consider adding a pulse ox to your data acquisition. Sometimes you have to consider what your untreated AHI was and then look at the data with that in mind. If your OSA was severe...
