Just received a letter today notifying me that I received a $8,000/year merit based scholarship from the UM College of Engineering. I was just wondering if anyone else got this, and whether this is a rare offer.

Am I more likely to get accepted if, when selecting a major on the application, I put something that falls under physical science and math, or computer and information systems, as opposed to engineering? And if I don't enter a major under engineering on the application, will it still be possible to pursure an engineering major when I need to declare one?

Most high schoolers/college freshmen (hereafter HS/CF) tend to have the view that chemical engineering is highly chemistry based. A reasonable assumption considering the name. However, most students of chem.e. will say that it is mostly physics based. When I was a freshman in college I was told much the same. I've also seen this on CC and a few other places. As I wrap up my penultimate ...

It definitely makes a difference which major you choose. My daughter got accepted into the Eberly college of Science and during orientation the Dean told us that it is a lot harder to get into PSU Eberly College as opposed to some other colleges within the university. I'm assuming Engineering would be tougher to get in as well.

I don't know %s these days, but i assure you Cornell produces a goodly share of real engineers, to a far greater extent than some other schools they play football (badly) against.

I am not into Greek life. I went to UIUC. I had a great time there. People like to talk about how great the Greek life is there and forget some of us can't stand the whole Greek system. I was there for my undergrad and was never short of something to do unless it was one of those times where all of my friends had exams and I didn't or something, which rarely happened. The Greeks there were ...

Ok, step back and take a deep breath and...... STOP TRYING SO HARD!!! What is the point of trying to impress some girl? If you have to work that hard to impress her, then chances are she isn't really the girl for you anyway. Of course there are exceptions, but generally you shouldn't have to bend over backwards just to get a girl to look at you. Don't start out by going to some concert ...
