by Glenn Greenwald Earlier this week, Kevin Drum said that "nine times out of ten" Obama's policies are "pretty much what expected" but that "the biggest one-time-out-of-ten where he's not doing what expected is in the area of detainee and civil liberties issues." Similarly, Andrew Sullivan cited "accountability for war crimes and civil rights" as among the very ...

Senator Feingold at www.feingold.senate.gov/ru leoflaw has issued a report card on The Obama Administration's Efforts to Restore the Rule of Law During its First 100 Days. It is one of the many things Senator Feingold is doing to champion civil liberties. Unfortunately, his is one of the few leadership voices we have on the issue. I think Caroline Kennedy, who has written on civil ...

I expect civil liberties to be restored. I certainly don't expect President Obama to continue the denial of civil liberties that George W Bush started with the Patriot Act. Why renew it? And why do it on the sly? This is certainly not what I expected of President Barack Obama. see http://ipsnorthamerica.net /news.php?idnews=2694

From here . Quote: A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., heard arguments last week about whether police should have to get a warrant before putting a GPS device on a suspectÂ’s car. It is a cutting-edge civil liberties question that has divided the courts that have considered it. GPS devices give the government extraordinary power to monitor peopleÂ’s movements...

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union has sued a north Florida school district. The lawsuit claims the Alachua County School District violated students' rights by not allowing them to wear T-shirts with an anti-Islamic message. The civil rights organization says it doesn't agree with the "Islam is of the Devil," message printed on T-shirts distributed by the Dove World ...

( We need to get off the GOP train and start pro peace, pro civil liberties rallies. The tea parties are being used to divide us and put us in bed with the NeoCons. If we stop the wars and secure civil liberties, we will accomplish many of our goals and repulse the Neocons and religious right that support the wars. If we don't do this, the Liberty movement will be marginalized and ultimately...

The war on drugs isn't about people getting high. It isn't about stopping people from using pot as medicine. It's an excuse to funnel money into the Police/Prison system. You can't just arm your local suburban police with M-16s or build a giant prison for no good reason. Having a "war-on-something" (TM) helps the Gov't. to achieve that goal.

These are not policies Obama has failed yet to uproot; they are policies he has explicitly advocated and affirmatively embraced as his own. That's exactly the point I try to emphasize to Obama supporters, but they continue to repeat the tired "you can't expect him to fix everything Bush screwed up overnight" argument. Ughh. I guess we'll just have to wait until MSNBC and CNN make ...

Edited on Thu Nov-26-09 12:52 AM by kenny blankenship A regime that endlessly pushes out becomes more and more insecure in its interior, making enemies everywhere even as it draws them into itself, and inevitably it treats its own citizens more and more like conquered peoples. I guess we'll be told now that we can't complain because we voted for him.
