I want to avoid dumping the hops directly into the beer, so in the past i've used nylon bags with glass beads to weigh it down. Only problem is the hop pellets expand and it's a PITA to get out of the carboy. I was thinking of finding/fabbing some type of "cylinder" made from plastic or SS that was just smaller in diameter than the carboy neck, but has firm sides so i can just lift it out when...

So Wed night I made an AHS clone of Sierra Nevada. Hit OG no problem. Transferred about the first 2 gallons to carboy with about a 3 foot drop, shook to insane levels. Transferred last 3 gallons, with again a good drop into the carboy, and shook it pretty well again. I had about 6" of foam in the carboy after the transfer from all the shaking/aerating. I sprinkled the dry yeast on top (...

I'm getting ready to start brewing a Porter sometime today and I just noticed that my carboy brush from AHS is developing rust in some spots. Is it safe to use or garbage? Any way to safely neutralize the rust without using harsh chemicals?

I just purchased a new 6 gallon glass carboy for a primary. I notice that there are a few small bubbles in the glass work that are not present in any of my older 5 gallon carboys. Is this an indicator or poor quality or should this new carboy hold up just as fine as my much older ones?

So after my last brew i put in some oxyclean and filled up my 6.5 gallon glass carboy with room temp water. I then left it for a few weeks in my garage. I dumped out the water and used my carboy brush to try and get the crystals/chunks of oxyclean that have stuck to parts of the inside of the carboy. They would not come off. I then filled the thing with hot water from my sink and shook ...

I think I know the answer to my question but is a 5 gal carboy suffecient as a primary for a 5 gal batch? All of my 6.5 gal carboys are in use right now and had to resort to using a 5 gal. Hey, anybody else have issues with the universal carboy bungs not providing a tight seal when wet? I really like them and use the non-drilled and drilled almost exclusively, but sometimes they don't really seal well when coming right out of the sanitizing solution and into the neck of a wet carboy. Do you dry them off and the inside of the neck as well? I would think that that is a ...

So, this is my first extract brew (Real Ale Fireman's #4). Got my kit from AHB. I know the instructions say after primary let it sit in secondary for 5-7 days to help clear. Now when I look at my carboy with a flashlight on the other side, I can def still see stuff suspended in the beer and have a few yeast clumps still floating. Do I let it sit a while longer? My other concern is I took...

This is one of those "how bad is it" questions. I got a Vinters Reserve Costal Red to do, my first kit. I put the kit together in a primary 6.5 gal glass carboy. In Nov. I have not touched it since. I was going to do the following: 1. Check the gravity - should be done at this point 2. Rack it 3. De Gas it 4. Add the other packs - Sorbate Potassium, Metabisulphite ...

After racking from my kettle to my primary, I found I didn't have enough top up water so I had to boil and chill more. While doing so, I had quite a trub layer form, more than I've had before. Now I'm at full 5 gal level in my carboy, but I'm thinking of racking it into another carboy and leave the trub behind. This has been sitting almost 2 hours now with no yeast yet. Is there any benefit ...
